Club News: 19.08.2026
Ahead of the 2026/27 season beginning, we are pleased to confirm a new session structure that will allow us to attract more members to the club and give those attending a better experience.
The major change to our structure sees our new Lightning Bolts session added, which are aimed at giving youngsters aged between 6 – 11 years the opportunity to have fun, in a play based inclusive environment. We recognise the importance of building good foundations at an early age with enjoyment and safety being the top priorities. Children will only want to take part if they are having fun and parents and carers will only bring them if they are safe, so the sessions recognise the importance of these and cater to the needs of the children whilst building confidence in a fun, social setting.
The Lightning Bolts sessions welcome disabled and non-disabled youngsters with everybody taking part in mini sports chairs. Games such as British Bulldog and Stuck in the Mud are firm favourites with floor baskets and foam basketballs used for different basketball-based games.
Parents, siblings and friends are encouraged to get involved in this session so youngsters with lower limb impairments don’t feel like they have to attend separate clubs to their peers because of any disabilities they may have. Coaches and volunteers are suitably qualified and experienced to run and adapt these sessions with plenty of positive role models throughout the club for youngsters to look up to and learn from.
Taking place at the same time, our Team Lightning Sessions will run in parallel for those aged over 10 years of age. The slight overlap in ages allows us to provide the right environment for members based on several factors including ability, strengths and understanding. These sessions provide a progression for those who may have come through from the Lightning Bolts or for older children who are further along with their co-ordination and understanding.
Sessions still prioritise safety and enjoyment with games played that further build upon everyone’s physical literacy and fundamental abilities. Activities focus on technique and how that progresses into skill-based scenarios. These sessions are ideal for older children or adults to come in for tasters as they take part in wheelchair sport for the first time with the opportunity for new adults to get used to being in a sports chair away from the main group to help them learn more about adapted physical activity.

Finally, our Team Thunder session will then build on the good work of the last few years with a session designed around the technical and tactical elements of the game. Running in line with our club’s objectives, this session will prioritise using wheelchair basketball to promote health and wellbeing as a priority with the opportunity for those to play organised, competitive fixtures if they want to. An ideal environment for those looking to learn more and improve as well as those looking to increase their levels of physical activity so they can lead a happy, healthy lifestyle.
Our new session structure for the 2026/27 season will start on August 20th 2026 and will hopefully give us the best chance of attracting new members and supporting our existing members with quality opportunities.
