Club News: 19.08.2026
Last season saw the club make more solid progress both on and off the court. Whilst the club continues to rebuild in many areas, we do so missing some key volunteers who we continue to send our best wishes to.
We once again entered a team into British Wheelchair Basketball’s Inspire League where we again came up against both Cheshire Phoenix and Rhyl Raptors across three round robin fixture days.
The first round was held on the 24th of January 2026 in Rhyl Leisure Centre. The day hosted three excellent games with Thunder coming away with two wins from two, one of which was one point victory (34-35) over Cheshire Phoenix in what proved to be the closest game of the day.
We hosted the second round of the Motability Scheme Inspire League at our Creuddyn Leisure Centre base on Saturday March 14th, 2026. Thunder again showed the progress they’ve made with another two victories, which was even more impressive considering players from the previous season had progressed beyond the Inspire League and new members of the squad were breaking through to impact games and score consistent points.
The final round of the league was another successful day for all clubs with the progress each player was making evident to see. The Inspire Leagues are all about entry level competition aimed at creating a supportive and welcoming environment for participation. That’s exactly what happened with players, coaches and volunteers all making fantastic progress.
Results can be useful and help demonstrate the progress made by players and clubs, but the greater strides forward are often shown in other ways. More information on the 2025/26 Inspire League can be found here Competitions - British Wheelchair Basketball looking in the North West region.

In addition to our second season entering a BWB competition, we also made the decision to enter our very first Women’s Team into UKWB’s Women Cup. This competition is a special one-weekend, double elimination knockout round held in the Hoops Basketball Centre in Barrow-in-Furness.
Our small squad of players and coaches headed up for the event on the 7th and 8th of March and played matches which consisted of four eight-minute quarters. The Saturday saw our first game against the very strong Tees Valley Mohawks with Thunder putting in a great performance, albeit losing the match 16-21 against the eventual Women’s Cup winners. Later that afternoon we played against Wakefield Whirlwinds who were also very strong and came out on top by four points in a match that finished 20-16.
Well done to those youngsters for turning up and having fun even when the numbers have been low. We hope our new club structure and different ways of advertising our sessions will being more junior members in so more people can benefit from the opportunities we offer.
Paul Jones, Head Coach, put his thoughts about this season down “Over the past year, I have watched these players transform. They didn’t just improve their shooting percentages or defensive rotations; they grew to trust each other. We’ve faced some tough opponents and injuries, but the team have never dropped their heads. Every player has pushed their teammates to be better while holding themselves to the highest standards. We’ve evolved from a group of individual athletes into a true family that celebrates each other’s success. To the players; thank you for your belief in the system and your tireless work. You’ve earned every success and learnt from every loss. To our incredible families, supporters and Thunder community; your energy and support is greatly appreciated and helps the players and volunteers so much – thank you. I’m looking forward to another season of progress, with the development of our new structure supporting our junior programmes and membership. The future of Conwy Thunder looking incredibly bright.”
2025/2026 Season Review
The following day saw Thunder progress against Lancaster Bulldogs in the quarter final before bowing out against neighbours, Rhyl Raptors, in the semi-final. It was a weekend were a small squad showed real togetherness and development and all at the club are very proud of this group’s individual and collective achievements. Our club is more than just the teams that play on the court so as well as the players that wore the vest, we have seen some excellent development from our younger players. It’s fantastic to see the smiles on their faces and them supporting the rest of the club at events such as our Christmas Fun Night.
